“ There’s a LOT of great pizza in Fishtown already. But there’s an elusive taste of local pizza history to the pies @vincespizzeriafishtown, a spacious new branch of the Northeast Philly classic, Vince’s, which itself descends from the iconic Charlie’s Pizzeria on Roosevelt Blvd. founded in 1946.

There’s nothing trendy about these pies at all. But there’s just a simple purity to the taste of flour, water and yeast in these crackly thin crusts, the bright red sauce and zesty crumbles of freshly cooked sausage laced with onions and fresh mushrooms that snuck up on me as I bit into slice #2 (& then #3 & #4). Loved our white pie with spinach, broccoli, garlic and creamy ricotta clouds, too. Those crusts then carried a roastiness that lingered on my lips in a way I could savor all the way home, which I consider to be a telltale sign of quality dough. Of course, I suspect eating these pies fresh on site was also key to that maximum crusty snap. That’s a rare pleasure considering take-out is our standard m.o. these days…

It was very quiet there on a cold weeknight, but I suspect this new Vince’s will be hopping once performances get back to normal at @fillmorephilly across the street. Meanwhile, I enjoyed chatting with the co-owner and learning about the family history documented in vintage photos on the wall, from patriarch Charlie Yacovetti to his daughter Viola (Yacovetti) Rota (“Nana”), who opened Vince’s in the ‘80s with her husband Vince Rota (aka “Pop-Pop”).

BTW – the old-school house salad in a wooden bowl was ice cold, crunchy and perfect.”
